THE MONACO OCEAN PROTECTION CHALLENGE (MOPC) REWARDS FOUR INNOVATIVE BUSINESS IDEAS FOR OCEAN PRESERVATION! - 8th Edition

On Wednesday, May 14, the winners of the Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge (MOPC) – co-
organized by the International University of Monaco, the Oceanographic Institute, Prince Albert I of Monaco Foundation, Monaco Impact and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation – were
awarded during the Grand Finale held at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco
in the presence of numerous guests. Born in Monaco – a major player in Ocean preservation –
this high-level international competition is aimed at students and young entrepreneurs from
around the world. Its objective is to provide concrete support for the creation and development of start-ups
capable of demonstrating a positive impact on Ocean protection in the short or medium term.

The 2025 edition recorded a record number of applications, from both students and start-
ups, reflecting the growing reputation of the competition, particularly internationally. This

growing recognition is the result of the organizers’ work, increasingly effective word-of-mouth,
and the crucial role played by MOPC ambassadors, notably through incubation networks spread
across the five continents.

A strategic context to mobilize the private sector

This edition took place in a particularly strong context, just weeks ahead of major international
events for the Ocean: the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3), co-organized by France and Costa Rica from June 9 to 13, 2025, in Nice, and the Blue Economy and Finance
Forum (BEFF), labeled a “UNOC Special Event,” co-organized by the Government of the
Principality of Monaco, the Oceanographic Institute and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, in partnership with France and Costa Rica, to be held at the Grimaldi Forum on June 7 and 8. UNOC and BEFF
will highlight the necessary transition from an unsustainable maritime economy to a regenerative
blue economy, and the central role of innovation, whether technological, financial, or related to
governance.

Mobilizing the private sector is not only desirable: it is essential! The Monaco Ocean
Protection Challenge responds to this urgency by supporting a new generation
of entrepreneurs committed to the Ocean, fostering the emergence of concrete, high-
impact solutions, and connecting these talents with institutional and economic ecosystems that
enable projects to scale.

Several winners of this 8th edition – as well as from previous editions – will be invited to participate in the BEFF,
an excellent opportunity to expand their activities.

The 138 participating teams, coming from 129 universities representing 66 nationalities, worked
from mid-January to the end of March 2025 on developing a business plan aimed at presenting new
business concepts for a more sustainable Ocean. Of the 138 projects initially submitted,
and after two selection stages, 6 were chosen for the Grand Finale by a panel of
16 experts from the marine world, entrepreneurs, incubators and investors, and distributed across the
“Business Concepts” and “Start-ups” categories. Similar to a pitch competition, the finalists were invited to
present and defend their project orally on the stage of the Conference Room at the Oceanographic
Museum in order to convince the members of the jury.

Success stories of MOPC winners from previous editions

Ocean Twist Biotechnology, start-up winner of the 2021 edition, “Audience Award” (under the name
Ittinsect). The company’s founder, Alessandro Romano, took part in the 2025 final jury
and also delivered an inspiring speech to share his journey since winning. He also contributed to a unique sequence in the Aquarium of the Oceanographic Museum, during which the fish were fed with the innovative feed developed by his company. Ocean Twist Biotechnology develops aquaculture feed
based on insects or raw materials derived from the circular economy. The company continues its
development in producing insect-based feed for aquaculture in order to reduce dependence on fishmeal made from wild fish. In 2024, the company became Ocean Twist Biotechnology to mark a technological breakthrough that now enables the use of numerous raw materials from the circular economy, in addition to insects.
The agreement concluded with Eni, a global energy technology company, will allow the company to
transform 700,000 tons of residues from biofuel extraction into high nutritional value ingredients. CEO Alessandro Romano will deliver a keynote speech at the opening of the Grand Finale pitch session to share his successful experience of moving from business concept to start-up creation and development.
